  Benefit Screening & Reception

After years of development, the documentary video about women rabbis comes to Alameda, California in early 2005.

This documentary began in the early 1980's with Rabbi Linda Holtzman, of Philadelphia, one of the pioneers - the first woman rabbi to have her own pulpit. Holtzman is interviewed in her home, her synagogue, and captured on film conducting one of the first baby (girl) naming ceremonies.

Rabbi Laura Geller of Los Angeles, another well-known rabbinical pioneer, shares her early experience of Judaism as a quest for social justice, and outlines how women rabbis have influenced Judaism.

In Mendocino, California we're introduced to Rabbi Margaret Holub, part of a rural Jewish community. Holub helps make rituals more meaningful to her congregants, whether it's the New Moon celebration or the traditional mikveh (ritual immersion in water).

On the East Coast, Rabbi Sue Elwell shares her love for studying the Talmud (rabbinic commentary on the Torah) and Rabbi Shoni Labowitz tells of her path from an Orthodox upbringing to her discovery of the Jewish Renewal movement, where East meets West.

Rounding out this unique group is Rabbi Einat Ramon. Interviewed in St. Petersburg, Russia - where she officiated at the city's first Bat Mitzvah ceremony - Ramon shares her passion with the Diaspora and then returns to her homeland of Israel.
